Silver Link Publishing has over the past 28 years built a
reputation for quality in production. Our softcover illustrated
volumes have always been printed on gloss art paper and benefit
from sewn binding to provide strength and longevity. Our hardback
books are produced to the same high standards and also benefit from
the use of traditional head and tail bands. We are now introducing
the first of our Silver Link Silk Editions - which will feature a
'silver silk' bookmark (such silks date back to the reign of
Elizabeth 1) and will be produced on a 170gsm gloss art paper. Such
quality and tradition we believe will be very much welcomed by
todays discerning print book readers and in particular the
thousands of avid enthusiasts of The Severn Valley Railway in
conjunction with whom we ar able to bring this first of an
occasional release of Silver Link Silk Editions. The original
Severn Valley Railway was 40 miles long and linked Hartlebury in
Worcestershire with the county town of Shrewsbury, via Bewdley and
Bridgnorth in the picturesque Severn valley. It was part of the
national railway network, and served the local community for 101
years, its trains carrying passengers, goods, produce and coal.
With the rapid growth of road tranport in the mid - twentieth
century, much of this traffic disappeared, and unsurprisingly the
line was closed as a through route by British Railways in 1963. But
that was not the end of the story. The enthusiasm of an expanding
group of preservationists saw nearly half of the route - 16 miles -
bought by the second Severn Valley Railway, in three stages between
1970 and 1984. The route was successively reopened for steam -
hauled passenger services south from Bridgnorth to Hampton Loade,
then to Bewdley and finally to Kidderminster. This album records
some of the results of this success, seen on a northbound journey
over the line through the lenses of some of its finest
photographers. We hope you enjoy it!
Over the past 26 years Silver Link have for been working closely
with many of Britain's Preserved Railways publishing many books
featuring lines the length and breadth of the country. We are
therefore very pleased to have agreed to prepare the official guide
books for The West Somerset Railway and The Severn Valley Railway
as part of an exciting new concept in railway book publishing.
David Mather has written a delightful easy reading volume
recounting the story of the rise of Britain's Standard Gauge
Heritage Railway scene from its early beginnings in the 1960s
through to the present day. In the first section of the book David
tells the story from his own personal perspective drawing on
recollections of the lines he visited and the many trips he took
over the years in pursuit of steam. He records the use of heritage
steam locomotives on the main line and at events. In the second
section David illustrates the growth of the movement through a
selection of preserved lines 'biographies'. In a book of this size
it is of course not possible to include every line in the country
in this section, however...In what we believe is a first in railway
book publishing this title is being released on a multiple edition
and regional basis. The editions will vary with the inclusion of
official guide books from a selected railway in each edtion. This
is The Severn Valley Railway edition.
Set in Louisiana in the forties and fifties it begins with three
men and a boy in a delightful little shack in the marsh on the
Intercoastal Canal. The shack is a great private retreat from life,
women and the worries of the world; a place to drink beer, play
poker and tell lies and fishing stories. They are awaiting the
arrival of the fourth regular, a brash character who usually rides
down the bank of the canal on a bicycle. He doesn't arrive but a
most unusual Cajun trapper appears, barges into their shack,
extracts some treasure concealed under a roof beam and departs in
his pirogue cutting loose their motorboat, their only means of
getting back to civilization. A big storm, writhing snakes, loss of
power, and the cabin set afire force them out on the bay at night
in a fishing dinghy that was stored under the shack. Among the
four: a promising artist on sabbatical from his New York studio, a
former lawyer, now a used-car salesman who will become a great
'preacher', a small town newspaper editor who will become governor,
the boy of misspent youth, who will mature rapidly and excitedly -
plus the character who never got there and the mysterious Cajun and
his treasure. Good Cajun food is mentioned along with duck hunts
and many beautiful, exciting women of amazing backgrounds As well
as 'the Senator' a delightful wealthy old romantic enamored with a
beautiful model.

Optical methods, stimulated by the advent of inexpensive and
reliable lasers, are assuming an increasingly important role in the
field of engineering metrology. This book is aimed at industrial
development engineers who wish to take advantage of optical
methods. Requiring only a basic knowledge of optics, the text
provides a compendium of practical information prepared by leaders
in the field. All of the contributors have considerable practical
experience in the application of optical methods to metrology. The
book covers all of the major optical methods in use including
traditional optical, laser-based and fibre optics techniques. A
wide range of applications, ranging from measurement of distance
and displacement in large-scale civil engineering projects to
measurements of small manufactured components, are covered.
